GuestHollow's Awesome History Timeline Spines

The following books (or materials) are scheduled in over a period of time. Since they would be inconvenient to order from your library, I recommend purchasing the ones you are interested in using. I've also listed additional resources you'll need to buy like kits, etc.

Some items aren't rated yet. I'll also add in more notes about some of the items later!

Mystery of History

Mystery of History Vol 2

Otter's rating: 5 stars

I used to use the Story of the World series of books for my big kids (who are now all grown up!). However, I found Mystery of History to cover a lot more people and events, especially Christian events. Sometimes Story of the World covers something in an easier to understand way, but MOH does a pretty good job too. I ended up using both which worked out really well. I did NOT use all the MOH extras like maps and tests, etc.

If you have an older student, you may want to use MOH. If you have a younger student, you may want to use SOTW.

Peril and Peace

History Lives Series: Peril and Peace

Otter's rating: 3 stars

This series of books covers church history in a narrative format.

The Picture History of Great Inventors

The Picture History of Great Inventors

Otter's rating: 5 stars

This is a very visual book that's lots of fun. It's used from early on in the schedule all the way through modern times. I like it because it's a quick read (will take 5 minutes to look over each inventor's page spread) with lots of pictures that help cement each inventor's contributions.

Map Trek

Map Trek

Otter's rating: 3 stars (Otter is not a big fan of mapwork. He much prefers to check things out on Google Earth.)

I think geography is an integral part of any history study. I recommend the 6 e-book set to fill almost all of your map needs for your homeschool studies. These maps are beautiful and functional!

Young Folk's History of England

Young folk’s History of England

This is an optional FREE supplement that adds a English history flavor to your world history studies.

Otter's rating: 4 stars His comment: it's redundant at times if you are reading all of the other books too.

Trial and Triumph

Trial and Triumph: Stories from Church History

Otter's rating: 5 stars

Both Otter and I liked this book better than the History Lives series. It often covered the same people and stories, but for whatever reason we retained it better.

The Story of the World

The Story of the World 2  and Activity Book

Otter's rating: 4 stars

Otter prefers Mystery of History, but he likes the Story of the World series as well. They both compliment each other nicely and I often like the map or activity suggestions/assignments from the Story of the World Activity Book much better than MOH's extras.

You really don't need both books, but it worked out really well for us to use them.

NOTE: I have an older version of SOTW and my schedule reflects that. However, it should be easy enough for you to follow along in a newer addition, if you use the table of contents.

BrainPOP

BrainPOP

Otter's rating: 5 stars

We use BrainPOP for almost all of our subjects. BrainPOP has short, animated (and fun) movies on a myriad of subjects. Each movie is followed by an optional quiz. Try the free movies first to see if your kids like it. It's kind of expensive for a year's homeschool subscription ($99) but we use it enough to justify the cost.

A History of Us

A History of US: 11-Volume Set (HUS) I have the 3rd edition of this set, so what I’ve scheduled may not line up perfectly if you have a later edition.

Otter's rating: 2 stars His sister LOVED this series and would have rated it a 5.

History of US is colorful and more engaging than most textbooks. I have mixed feelings about it as the author is sometimes a bit politically correct, etc. but it's a homeschool standard and I've got it on my shelf, so I've scheduled it in.

Interactive 3-D Maps

Interactive 3-D Maps: American History

Otter's rating: 3 stars (Otter is not a big fan of mapwork. He much prefers to check things out on Google Earth.)

I like this set of maps. There are little 3-D items to stick to it that help students remember what they are learning. Each map comes with text to read and discuss.

Siege Tower

Catapult

Siege Tower Kit
Make this kit and act out some battles with Playmobil.

Otter’s rating 5 stars

This thing is a pain to put together, but turns out really nice at the end.

Click here to see the one Otter made!

Catapult Kit

Greenhouse

DuneCraft Windowsill Greenhouses - Medieval Herber

Otter's rating: 5 stars

Otter's rating is based on the fact that we grew the actual herbs in our garden instead of using this kit. If you don't have a garden though, this should do in a pinch.

Monks and Mystics

Monks and Mystics

Otter's rating: 3 stars

The Story of Liberty

The Story of Liberty

This is a free suppliment that sometimes covers events not mentioned in the other spines. Since it's free, you don't have to buy it and can use it or dump it as you see fit. You may want to download it before your studies to have it on hand.

Discovering Great Artists

Discovering Great Artists

This book covers many artists and includes art projects and activities for each one!

Mystery of History Volume 3

Mystery of History Vol. 3

Otter's rating: 5 stars

Adventure Tales

Adventure Tales Vol. 1

You can use this book FREE if you use the online version. The other option is to download a PDF. I really like this series. It's visual, easy to understand and has a student workbook that's great for notebooking.

Time Travelers

Time Travelers New World Explorers

Otter's rating: 4 stars

Time Travelers is a really awesome, high quality option that adds in a bunch of activities and printables that help make your studies memorable.

Courage and Conviction

Courage and Conviction: Chronicles of the Reformation Church

Otter's rating: 3 stars

Story of the World

The Story of the World 3 and Activity Book

Otter's rating: 4 stars

American Heritage

The American Heritage New Illustrated History of the United States

This set of books was my husband's when he was a child. You can get it on Amazon, however, it's really just an "extra" and not needed. I scheduled it in because I have it and like it.

The World of Captain John Smith

The World of Captain John Smith

Otter's rating: 5 stars

Otter didn't like this book at first, but then he changed his mind. So far he's enjoyed every book by Genevieve Foster.

This series of books cover a fairly large swath of time with events happening all over the world. I've learned a lot from them! They are THICK and sometimes a tough read-aloud becuase there are so many events and people covered. You'll get depth from them though, so it's really worth getting through.

The World of William Penn

The World of William Penn

I still haven't scheduled this one in, but will, once we get to it.

Time Travelers Colonial Life

Time Travelers Colonial Life
Time Travelers American Revolution
Time Travelers The American Revolution
Our Living Constitution

Our Living Constitution, Grades 5 - 8: Then and Now

This is a workbook.

George Washington

George Washington's World

I still haven't scheduled this one in, but will, once we get to it.

Time Travelers Early 19th Century

Time Travelers Early 19th Century
Lewis & Clark
Lewis & Clark American History Figures Set by Imex
Abraham Lincoln's World

Abraham Lincoln's World

I still haven't scheduled this one in, but will, once we get to it.

Time Travelers The Civil War

Time Travelers The Civil War
History Pockets Civil War

History Pockets: The American Civil War
If you don't want to use Time Travelers, History Pockets is another alternative for Civil War printables. Because it has a lot less activities, it may be a less overwhelming choice.
The illustrations are very clean and even if you only construct the materials and don't color things in (we don't) - your student will probably learn a lot and end up with a nice portfolio of his/her work.

If you are using my schedule with an older student, you'll probably want to use Time Travelers (see above).

Story of the World 4

The Story of the World 4 and Activity Book

Time Travelers Industrial Revolution
Time Travelers Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression

20th Century Lapbook

20th Century Lapbook

I have an older version of this lapbook that I got for free. Ignore, if you aren't interested. If you are, I scheduled it all out.
