Why We Created Beowulf’s Grammar

We spent over twenty years homeschooling. During that time, we used a multitude of grammar programs. Almost all of them were DULL, and it was a struggle to retain some of the concepts. Our kids went over the same grammar terms, year after year. Grammar was almost invariably boring with colorless workbooks and some of the most tedious, mind-numbing sentences ever created for a student’s analysis. There never seemed to be a theme throughout the workbooks we used…just endless exercises that looked or sounded similar. There was no creativity, and certainly little, if any, fun. It was no wonder our kids weren’t “chomping at the bit” to learn or explore grammar!

This is the grammar program you’ve been looking for!

Beowulf’s Grammar is our remedy to the dearth of interesting grammar programs. We’ve included plenty of hands-on activities to help reinforce learning, fun characters, comics, humor, games, and more!

Beowulf’s Grammar is different because it’s creative and designed to engage learners instead of bore them! We’ve taken our 20+ years teaching experience and found ways to make topics understandable and accessible, even to younger or reluctant learners.

Beowulf’s Grammar is a beloved favorite of homeschools across the world!

Student Workbook

Everything you need to teach grammar!

The printable student workbook is stuffed full of terrific grammar lessons and activities. There is also a gentle, optional *spiral review built in via the weekly review pages in the appendix. These extra pages help students retain the things they’ve learned, even when they’ve moved onto another topic.

*Spiral review allows students to revisit and practice previously taught skills and information. It gives students many opportunities to better understand material and achieve mastery.

Teacher’s Manual

Beowulf’s Grammar Teacher’s Manual has nearly every page of the workbook in miniature, so you can follow along with your student’s lessons without having to share his/her book.

The teacher’s manual also contains all of the answers to the exercises, lessons, and review sheets.

In addition, there are lots of extra ideas to make things even more fun and relevant, and there are extra printables to help expand lessons.

Fun Projects

We work hard to engage ALL types of learners.

Grammar doesn’t have to be boring! We’ve created all sorts of hands-on activities, games, and projects to help concepts stick.

Here’s a small sample of activities :

  • Make a pronoun pizza
  • Noun treasure chest and hunt
  • Making a menu to learn adjectives
  • Hands-on apostrophes activity
  • Helping verbs box and song
  • Turn adjectives into adverbs wheel
  • Subject and predicate mix-and-match

Beowulf’s Grammar Curriculum is designed for grades 2-6. It can also be used with an older student or even an adult who needs to learn or review grammar concepts (if s/he doesn’t mind some of the juvenile graphics and/or activities). If you aren’t comfortable with grammar, you can learn along with your student(s)!

No previous grammar knowledge is assumed, so you can fill in possible gaps your student may have from previous years, or you can work from scratch to build a brand-new grammar foundation!

This grammar workbook is designed to be used by a multitude of ages, so it will require a multitude of approaches based on your student’s ability level. Younger students may need you to read pages out loud, be on hand to point things out, and help keep them on track. Older students may be able to go through the workbook by themselves (with supervision for activities), as each lesson is explained to the student. Reluctant writers can do some of the lessons orally. Be flexible and make it work for you and your unique situation!

For some students, Beowulf’s Grammar can be self-teaching (except for the supervision of and assistance with activities and crafts). All of the pages are designed so that Beowulf is (or I am) doing the teaching. Everything is explained step-by-step and presented in a friendly way. There is no awkward parent script to read and slog through. Having said that, there are plenty of teaching ideas and notes in the teacher’s manual for parents who would like more guidance!

Beowulf’s Grammar covers all eight parts of speech as well as parts of a sentence and other grammar concepts like punctuation. It doesn’t just cover the basics; it also delves into some more complicated grammar concepts that aren’t usually included in a primary grammar book. I believe children are smart and can absorb these concepts if they are presented in an accessible way! Click the download button to see the table of contents of our program to see all the concepts covered.

Beowulf’s Grammar is very flexible. It was designed to be used over the course of about a year, but many customers use it over 2 years, especially with younger students. Middle schoolers and high schoolers using the program may use it at an accelerated pace over the course of one semester.

There is an optional 33-week schedule provided in Beowulf’s Grammar Teacher’s Manual.

If you are using Beowulf’s Grammar in conjunction with our language arts program, it is scheduled out over 33 weeks.

Feel free to go at your pace!

Yes!

If you are very comfortable with grammar and don’t mind going through all of the exercises to correct them, you can possibly do without the teacher’s manual.

Having said that, we think the teacher’s manual is an integral part of the curriculum due to the additional ideas, teaching explanations, suggestions, additional activities, and the easy-to-read answer key that will make your homeschooling job easier.

You can keep your files forever, if you save your initial download!

Do you have suggestions for printing the workbook?

Many of our customers use The Homeschool Printing Company to print the workbook and then view the teacher’s manual via their home computer or tablet (and print some of the extra activity pages from the teacher’s manual using their home printer).  The Homeschool Printing Company’s and Family Nest Printing prices seem to be reasonable.

Some families print the workbook using black ink and look at the color comics using a computer or a tablet.

Other families use remanufactured ink cartridges to save $$ or subscribe to the HP Instant Ink program. We used to purchase low cost ink from Carrot Ink when we were homeschooling.

Some families take the PDF to their local copy shop (such as Barnes & Noble) or library and have the pages printed out if the cost is cheaper than the above suggestions.

Can I print the pages double-sided?

Yes! We formatted the pages to print double-sided in 2022.

Can the workbook be printed out in black-and-white?

Yes, but we recommend it be printed in color, if possible.

Do I need more than one print-out if I’m using this with multiple students?

Yes, you will need to print extra copies of the interactive pages and review sheets (in the back of the workbook). You can print just one copy of any comics and lesson pages, or you can view those pages on a computer or tablet.

Is there any way to use Beowulf’s Grammar without printing it?

No, you will have to print out at the very least some of the activities and the parts of speech cards. However, some customers have used apps on the iPad like GoodNotes and Notability that allow you to open a PDF, mark, write, and type on it, and even do some of the cut-and-paste activities. If you use Beowulf’s Grammar this way, you can save a LOT on printing costs and easily use it among siblings.

Please see the table of contents in the Beowulf’s Grammar Workbook. The review sheets are at the back of the workbook starting on page 346. If you downloaded the workbook in four parts, they are in the fourth download.

Yes, on a case-by-case basis depending on the amount of paperwork they require and the bureaucracy that needs to be navigated. 😉

No. We only offer a digital version at this time. You can print out your materials at home or have them printed via a printing service.

While Beowulf’s Grammar is a stand-alone grammar program that can be used by itself, it is also scheduled in our language arts curriculum as a grammar “spine.” It’s used to teach grammar. Beowulf’s Grammar covers all eight parts of speech as well as parts of a sentence and other grammar concepts like punctuation.

Guest Hollow’s Language Arts Curriculum is exactly that… a full curriculum schedule. Guest Hollow’s Language Arts Curriculum covers a variety of language arts subjects like grammar, writing, literature, poetry, spelling, copywork & dictation, and vocabulary. Beowulf’s Grammar is scheduled in Guest Hollow Language Arts as a resource to teach grammar (along with other fun books and literature).

You do NOT need Guest Hollow’s Language Arts to use Beowulf’s Grammar. You do need Beowulf’s Grammar in order to use Guest Hollow’s Language Arts.

We are Christians, but Beowulf’s Grammar Curriculum is not intended to be a “Christian resource”. However, there may be infrequent (or what we consider to be) minor references or links to resources that mention Christian ideas, values, or sectarian topics even in our secular/non-religious/neutral curriculums.

Please note: On page 41 there is a Christian reference where the Bible is treated like a piece of literature. The crossword puzzle clue says, “The Bible verse in Proverbs 16:18 says: __________ goeth before destruction and an haughty spirit before a fall.” The answer is pride. On the same page there is a reference to Easter candy. Secular families can skip this page entirely (it will not hurt the curriculum in any way), or a parent can write the answer in by hand. These are the only Biblical references in the entire curriculum (400+ pages) that we recall.

I received a review copy of Beowulf’s Grammar.

This is a playful grammar program for elementary aged students. I was impressed at both how cute it is and how deep it goes. It covers material that goes beyond the previous grammar programs I have used.

I started out this program with my 3rd and 5th graders over a short break to try it with my students, give them some more grammar practice, and give them another perspective on grammar. They loved it so much that when I asked if they wanted to continue it when we started up school again, even though it would be in addition to our normal all-in-one English curriculum, they enthusiastically shouted, “Yes!” One of them even sat gushing to dad one night about how much she loves “the new grammar,” telling him all about her favorite prepositions.

We are not done with the program yet; we’ve done about half of the curriculum (through the section teaching on direct and indirect objects). My kids have enjoyed what we’ve done. I do think they’ve gained a deeper understanding on the topics they had already covered and also a good understanding on the topics that were new to them. The various types of practice and review both keep the program fun rather than monotonous and ensure strong understanding of the topics.

There are comics, worksheets, games, and lapbook type activities to teach and practice the parts of speech, basic punctuation, parts of the sentence, sentence analysis, and diagramming. I recommend using this curriculum on a computer, laptop, or tablet rather than printing it as it has a lot of color pages. If you were to print, some pages would need to be printed single sided (as you cut parts of the page out), and some could be printed double sided (which would save paper). We do this curriculum on a large format tablet with a PDF annotation program to write where needed. When we get to a page that requires printing, we print out those pages as needed. If I didn’t have an easy way to annotate a PDF, I’d probably do a lot of the exercises orally.

The teacher book includes a suggested 33-week schedule, miniature versions of the student pages (with solutions), and suggestions for teaching, clarification, and extra activities. This would be an easy program to compact into less time if you wanted it to be done sooner than 33-weeks (if you were using it for review or an older child).

We have only finished 1/2 of the book. We are saving the rest for the fall, but my daughter told a principal, who is a friend, that grammar was her favorite subject. He said he has never heard that one and needed to check out what we use! Both my 12 year olds always willingly participate. I’m learning it too!

  3. Christa Farmer (verified owner)

We can’t say enough good about GH Grammar!! My son is in the 7th grade and struggles with SPD issues. We use the Grammar as a part of the Language Arts program and it’s a terrific set! But if you are just looking for grammar as a stand alone, this will not disappoint! This is the first time I’ve seen him engaged in and enjoying a language arts program. The assignments provide enough of a blend of visual, hands on, and written work that I feel it reinforces what is being taught very well. He has enjoyed this so program much that we’re looking at other GH curricula for his future! Thanks Guest Hollow!

I just bought the bundle set. I will be homeschooling for the first time. I have 2 girls ages 6 and 8. When I showed my girls this program and the samples, they got excited and were laughing and want to start this weekend! Another note: when I was shopping at a store for home school grammar, I would show my girls another program, and they would tell me, “no mom” “we want the one with the dog and fun learning”. I’m trying to gather all my wits and thoughts on this new home school adventure. Stumbling on Guesthollow website and this grammar program has helped eased some of my stress. Just skimming through the pages of this grammar program has me excited as well. I will write another review as soon as we start, which, if up to my girls, will be this weekend.

I received a review copy of Beowulf’s Grammar.
We have tried many different grammar programs over the years and each have been dreaded by my children! Then we tried Beowulf and grammar became a requested subject. My kids have learned so much and had fun doing it. They have laughed their way through lessons, smiled while working on projects and learning the whole time.
I originally planned on using Beowulf for my oldest, but after seeing the fun he was having, I had two others join in. It was a great fit for my 6, 8 and 10 year old.

Beowulf’s Grammar Bundle is AWESOME! Our daughter’s, who are 6th and 10th graders, absolutely love their workbooks.Being a homeschool mom, it’s hard to find material that will keep my kids interested and have them look forward to a particular subject, but Beowulf’s Grammar changed that.
When my husband and I came across this website and viewed the materials, we really liked the workbooks and teacher manual, with how they were created and designed.
The workbooks are easy for them to understand and fun. The pictures are colorful and they enjoy the games within the lessons.
I would highly recommend Beowulf’s Grammar to any homeschool parent or an after school lesson for extra studies.

  7. JoAnna (verified owner)

We have been using this for about 4 weeks and absolutely love it. It is fun and my children are learning so much with it. I even find that I enjoy going over all of this with them everything is put together in a way that is easy to understand.

We LOVE Beowulf’s Grammar! It is so fun and engaging. This is one subject we look forward to everyday.

I can’t express how much my son loves this curriculum! We started homeschooling around April 2019 for about a month and a half. We eventually enjoyed it so decided to homeschool that fall when we finally moved to our new base (we’re a military family.) Since we were new to homeschooling, we just went with EasyPeasy. We weren’t really enjoying it, more so my son wasn’t interested to learn at the time so around February 2020, I wanted to change up our curriculum. I came across Beowulf’s Grammar. I reached out to Jennifer to get more information and she suggested I get the grammar bundle so we went with that. I forgot to mention my son is currently in 3rd grade. He is always looking forward to Beowulf! We have dogs so he’s also a dog lover so this curricula was a perfect fit for him. He loves the little comics we come across, we also love the little projects that come along with the workbooks as well as the printables you receive with this bundle. We roughly spend around 20-35 mins depending what it is that day. Usually we extend throughout the day as we choose to supplement and review what we have learned earlier. I do like how everything is laid out for you. It really helped me with the planning! We are actually almost done with this and my son has retained so much information! It has helped him so much and I plan to also use this for my daughter. This has definitely been enjoyable for us! It’s fun, informative, funny, and engaging. I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

This and Guest Hollow Geography are my first curriculums for my 3rd grader. The recommended books are wonderful with most available at my local library. There is just enough repetition in the workbook to get the content down without so much that my daughter gets bored. My only request is that they scrub it for any religious content so I can recommend it in my secular groups.

The owners are very responsive and engaging. And a dog on the cover? Who can resist Beowulf?

    • Jennifer Guest (verified owner)

Thank you so much for leaving a review! For anyone reading the comments, here is our take on if Beowulf’s Grammar is Christian or not:
We are Christians, but Beowulf’s Grammar Curriculum is not intended to be a “Christian resource”. However, there may be infrequent (or what we consider to be) minor references or links to resources that mention Christian ideas, values, or sectarian topics even in our secular/non-religious/neutral curriculums.

I believe there is a single reference to a Biblical saying (pride goes before a fall) on a puzzle page (that can be skipped without missing any concepts) and a holiday reference. I believe those are the only 2 references in a 400+ page book (but as noted, there may possibly be other infrequent or minor references). 🙂

  11. Melody (verified owner)

Before the year started I went through the PDF and printed only the comic book pages or the traditional “worksheets.” My kids are non-crafts kids, so I knew all the cutting and pasting would be an epic fail. This also meant I only printed about half the book – saving paper for me! I was a little nervous that I would be skipping important review by doing this, but we got everything we needed to know, it didn’t feel like we were missing anything important, and best of all, the kids really loved the program. The illustrations are wonderful, and using classic writing for short stories and sentences was a bonus. We had a great year with Beowulf, and I highly recommend it! I assume the same would be true if we had only used the “crafty” half of the book. So feel free to use whatever parts work best for you, and know that you will still get a great program.

Such a fun way to learn grammar! We love the hands on activities-my crafter especially loves the cutting and pasting!

I have even learned some new grammar concepts that I didn’t know previously!

  13. Wyndall Ferreira (verified owner)

This is the only grammar program that my soon to be sixth grader has liked! And we have tried quite a few! We both love the comics, the characters, and the clever examples/activities that are included. Very well put together! We will be finishing it up when school starts up again in the fall. We might try some of the science related curriculum, too!

  14. Kim Richter (verified owner)

I love that is has a variety of activities. My kid who doesn’t like bookwork asked to do Beowulf english today.
    It’s beautiful and engaging!
