The history behind The History Shelf

When I was homeschooling my son, I got fed up with the homeschool history programs that were available at the time. I absolutely LOVE history, and I wanted to cover history chronologically and in depth. Cultures throughout the world developed simultaneously. I wanted my son to grasp that concept, so I created a timeline based history curriculum for him. I linked all sorts of books, movies/videos, “spine” books (a spine book is the backbone of a study), etc. in an online timeline format. That was the frame for his world history curriculum for quite a few years. I added in mapwork, recipes, activities, crafts, etc. We both loved it.

As time went on, I realized what an “awesome” resource this was and wanted a timeline for myself with all sorts of great books and movies I could browse and choose from for my own to-read list depending on what time period I felt like reading about (or if I wanted to binge on some movies and videos set in a specific era). So, I created the History Shelf for ME based on the Awesome History Timeline.

This is a graphic I made way back when for the History Shelf.

When we updated Guest Hollow in January 2021, I realized the Awesome History Timeline and the History Shelf needed to be overhauled and updated, too. I decided to combine the two into The History Shelf.

Browse the books, lessons, and videos!

With this timeline, you can look up a period or date in history and see some great books & movies listed according to when they happened.

Studying something that happens in 1245? Browse the timeline and browse the resources! Need some extras for World War 2? Head to the timeline to see what’s listed. Want a pre-built backbone of a homeschool world history curriculum you can totally customize? You’ve got it…and for FREE!

Click on a book or video to read more about it and/or purchase it from Amazon.

*Please note: I am by no means a history expert. I do my best to catalogue books correctly, however, many books cover large swathes of time. I usually enter them in when they begin time-wise with some exceptions. Also, just because I list a book doesn’t mean I’ve read it or approve of it.

I recommend you PREVIEW anything you give to your kids (even if it’s in the kid’s category) as some titles, especially Y.A. (young adult) books can contain a variety of more mature content. Only you know what is OK and what is not for your family.

Happy reading, watching, and learning!

The History Shelf will be a constant work in progress. I’ll continue to add books and movies to it over time. If you want a book added, email me with the title and date in which it’s set!
