1.1 Science and the Natural World

Note: When you see reading assignments stretched over more than one day, you can decide how you want to read the sections. You may want to read everything all on one day or spread it out over more days. It’s up to you (unless a parent or teachers tells you otherwise)!

Deciding how to schedule work is a good life skill to have. 😉

Note: I recommend you *skim the workbook pages ahead of time, so you know what answers to look for as you are reading.

*To skim means to read over quickly without absorbing all the details.

  1. Hello,
I tried to link to the Sponge Bob extra activity and it doesn’t work…can you check that as my son was excited to do this activity…TYSM,
    Kathleen Burditt

    1. Hi Kathleen, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment! I just tried the link, and it’s working for me. Maybe try again with a different browser:
      http://sciencespot.net/Media/scimethodconvar.pdf
I’ll try emailing you a copy just in case it’s still not working for you. 🙂

  2. Hello. I tried to look at the Brain bop movies, but from what I see, I need a subscription??

    1. Just like all of the other books and resources called for in the Guest Hollow Biology curriculum, Brainpop is NOT included with the Guest Hollow curriculum. You may want to ask in the Guest Hollow Biology Facebook group if anyone knows about any current deals on BrainPop as there are sometimes BrainPop discounts available, but we do not track those.

  3. The Bio Inspiration Nature as museKQED-Quest video in the textbook talks about evolution. Is this normal throughout this curriculum? I thought the updated textbook did not contain Evolution.

    1. Some of the videos may contain brief mentions of evolution (but the text should not – let us know if you see any that we missed!!). I try to give a notice when videos do mention evolution (but replaced videos that were excessive, etc.). If you think a video has too much evolution in it, please let us know, and we can look for a replacement. Usually, the videos that have evolution in them are included because the other material is worthwhile. That particular video was supposed to start over 3 min into it, in order to skip most of the evolution references in the beginning. I’ve fixed it to do so. 🙂 Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention!

  4. Hi! I can’t seem to get the Answers study guide to load…it just shows up blank. The answers key loads perfectly though!

    1. I just checked it and it loaded great for me! You may want to try a different browser or try refreshing the page. I hope you can get it to work! I so appreciate you posting, though! I’d rather double check something than have a broken link. <3 Please don't be shy if you run into any other issues!

  5. Hello! Just a quick notes that the Characteristics of Life diagrams (draw) link appears to be broken. I thought I saw a place to report broken links somewhere but now I can’t find it!

    1. Hi Michelle! We’ll look into this and get it fixed up 🙂 THANK YOU so much for reporting the broken links. You can send broken link reports to guesthollow@memorableplaces.com via email or use our handy online web form here:
      https://guesthollow.com/contact-us/

      Thanks again!

    2. I just checked the link, and it is working now. If it’s still not working for you, try opening the link from a computer and not a tablet or phone. Sometimes PDF links don’t play nice when opening directly on other devices. It’s also possible that the link’s site was down temporarily. 🙂 Here is the direct link (that is currently working for me): http://askmrcscience.net/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/characteristicsoflifediagrams.pdf
Please don’t be shy if you run into anything else that isn’t working!
