Description
This is the perfect mini-unit to supplement a study on Japan, or to introduce students to the Japanese culture. It’s also great for a spring or seasons study, as it incorporates a lesson about cherry blossom viewing! It’s 8 pages long (not counting the map answer key) with the following activities:
* Reading
Students can read (or listen to you read) a beautifully illustrated report about the Japanese writing system. The report is presented in the context of a student who is sharing her struggles with learning the Japanese language and sharing her knowledge of how it works. Various items are incorporated into the 2 pages such as a Japanese flag to color, a map to refer to for the map printable included in the packet, etc.
* Practice writing a hiragana symbol
Students will then put their new knowledge into practice by writing and learning about the hiragana symbol that stands for the sound “ah”. This friendly writing printable is totally guided so that students learn the proper formation of the symbol and also learn several easy Japanese words that begin with that symbol. It’s also designed to be colored, if desired.
* Mapwork
Students learn that Japan is made up of islands and then label the 4 main islands, as well as the capital city of Tokyo. There is also a pronunciation guide.
* Information sheet about Hanami
Students learn about the spring celebration of Hanami (viewing cherry blossoms).
* Copywork
Students copy a modified passage about Hanami. You can use this for handwriting practice and also for grammar instruction as it contains quotation marks and parenthesis.
* Craft
Students can cut out and make a really cute pop-up card that makes a wonderful gift for mothers, friends, or family members. It also is a nice reminder of the information learned in this unit. The card features illustrations of cherry blossoms and a traditional Japanese costume.
* Coloring page
The last page is an optional coloring page titled “Hanami means “viewing flowers”.
Every page is digitally hand drawn and painted! If your students are studying Japan or Japanese culture, this set of printables is a perfect accompaniment. It’s also a great spring or seasons printable, as it teaches about the cherry blossoms in Japan!
You get a 10 page downloadable PDF with this purchase.
*NOTE: This packet of printables is adapted from my The Science of Seasons book & activity book with several NEW printables created just for this set.
